صور Roman Theatre at Apamea

Apamea III. Cardo Maximus التي كتبها Egisto Sani

According to the theories of Roman urban planning, the main streets were arranged according to the direction N – S for the “cardo maximus”, and E- W for the “decumanus maximus”. The main colonnade street of Apamea coincides with the “cardo maximus”; it is about two kilometers long, and 37-38 meters large. The north and south city gates mark the ending points of the “cardo”, they are respectively identified as the Antioch and Edessa (Homs) gates. Huge columns, 10 meters high, are aligned on both sides of the main street, and they are decorated with different carving. The distance between the columns is about 3 meters, and shadowy porticoes ran along the street. The columns were decorated with beautiful sculptures having the shape of protruding leaves or statues representing the city leaders or the most important personalities of the empire. The main public buildings were near the cardo maximus. Beside roman remains we can find Christian, Arab and Ottoman monuments: mosques, churches, houses etc. The most important Roman remains are the baths, the theatre, the agora, the walls, a memorial column, private houses and obviously the colonnade main street. Earthquakes destroyed the city several time: notable restoration works had been carried out in the recent past (1930).
