The Frauenkirche, at the east end of the Hauptmarkt, is the principal Catholic church in Nuremberg, Historically, Nuremberg had been a free city, and the population was mostly Protestant and Lutheran. The church was built in 1352-1362, and became a Protestant church in 1525, after the reformation. Nuremberg was made part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1806. A Catholic congregation bought the church in 1810 and refurbished it. Catholic Mass was first celebrated in the church in 1810.
